FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) - A woman was eating dinner when she began choking and started to lose consciousness. Luckily some heroes came to the rescue.

"I was kind of debating where to go to eat and I said, 'Let's just go to Applebee's,'" said U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Kelby Tidey.

A group of soldiers were just looking to have a meal and watch the Triple Crown at busy Applebee's just outside Fort Knox.

"We were packed," recalled Gigit Wolz, the restaurant's general manager. "I mean we actually had people standing at the door, we were on a wait."

Once inside, their fun night out became a matter of life and death.

"Next thing you know, 'We need help,' or something," Tidey remembered hearing.

The panic started. A woman sitting at a booth was choking.

"She was losing a good bit of consciousness," said Tidey. "She was turning blue and drooling a little bit."

An Army anesthesiologist who was in the restaurant started the Heimlich, but as the woman slipped from consciousness, Army nurses Tidey and Jordan Flynn sprang into action.

"I didn't really think about it," said Flynn. "I just knew I was going to have to do the Heimlich hard and fast to try to get whatever was there out of her throat."

The training started kicking in. The three soldiers kept going until they heard the woman gasp for air.

"You know it was a sigh of relief because at first things didn't look too good," Flynn said.

Wolz said everyone was holding their breath.

"The restaurant became quiet," said Wolz. "But then once they knew that she was fine everybody started clapping and you know, going up, telling them thank you."

The woman was able to walk to the ambulance. Word spread around post and to the higher-ups who will award Tidey and Flynn Army Achievement Medals.

"We are very proud of what they did," said George Wright, a U.S. Army ROTC Public Affairs Officer.

There is nothing but praise from those at Applebee's who gave the lifesaving soldiers a special salute.

"I'm thinking that if they weren't here, she probably would have died to be honest," Wolz said.

The two said they haven't spoken to the woman they saved since that night, but they hope she's doing ok.
