ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

Family and friends said their final goodbyes to a Wetumpka High School student who drowned last Wednesday while swimming with friends on the Coosa River in Elmore County.

Shalom Nowden's funeral was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the new Wetumpka High School gymnasium. A graveside service followed at Hillside Cemetery.

Two accounts have been set up for those who would like to offer help with burial expenses. One fund is being handled through First Community Bank in Wetumpka. The other is being handled through the online crowd funding site GoFundMe.com with the account available at gofundme.com/ahvbp4.

Nowden was a member of the school football and wrestling teams. He was swimming with friends on Corn Creek, a popular hangout for teens, when witnesses say he became distressed. Several tried to pull him to safety, but he went under the water. He briefly resurfaced but the rapidly moving water ultimately pulled him under.

Authorities called the situation "a horrible accident while he was swimming". Several dozen fellow students, coaches and other friends gathered at the site to be with the victim's family and to show their support.

The following agencies responded to the drowning: Elmore County Sheriff's Department, Wetumpka Fire Department, Wetumpka Police Department, Alabama Marine Police, Alabama Department of Public Safety, Haynes Ambulance, Montgomery Fire Department, Prattville Fire Department, Search and Rescue of Elmore County, Santuck Volunteer Fire Department and the Elmore County Emergency Management Agency.

"Our prayers and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Shalom at this very difficult time," said Kim Trost, Elmore County EMA/HS Office Public Information Officer.

Corn Creek is part of the Corn Creek Park which accesses the Coosa River. Map available HERE.
