Juneteenth Festival approaches

Posted: Updated:
TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Folks in Tifton are teaming up for an educational festival this weekend.  The South Georgia Juneteenth Festival will be Saturday at Fulwood Park.

Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.   The event is in honor of Dee and Doc Melton, who were African American pioneers in Tift County.

"It encompasses all people, regardless of your race, your ethnicity. It's about love, it's about coming together with unity. So this is what Doc Melton really fought for and we're just carrying on the vision," said Festival Organizer Ruenette Melton.

The free event runs from 10 to 8 Saturday and will include bands, games, water activities, and food vendors.

Organizers hope to make this an annual event.
