Trey Killian invited to USA Baseball tryouts

FAYETTEVILLE ( - Arkansas baseball starting pitcher Trey Killian has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2014 Collegiate National Team training camp, USA Baseball announced.

Killian is one of 33 players listed on the official roster, with the final 24-man roster being selected later this month. The 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will assemble on June 19, and the team will embark on a 39-day tour.

"Being selected to try out for Team USA is a big honor," said Killian. "It will be a humbling experience going out there with the best talent in college baseball. I have had a chance to play against a couple of the guys on the team and I'm going to go out there, give it my best shot and hopefully make the team."

The Mountain Home, Ark., native finished his sophomore year with a 2.30 earned run average in 94.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run or less in seven of his 14 starts and tossed four complete games on the year. He recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work at Missouri on May 15, and worked 9.1 innings in two playoff appearances, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out five.

"Trey did a tremendous job for us in the SEC this year," said Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. "We had some coaches that really wanted to give him a chance to make the team and I think it is deserving. When you look at his numbers with inning pitched, strikeouts and hits per inning he is as good as anyone."

Killian will see a familiar face when he arrives in North Carolina, as Van Horn has been selected as head coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The team's assistant coaches include Rob Childress (head coach at Texas A&M), Ray Birmingham (head coach at New Mexico) and Steve Rodriguez (head coach at Pepperdine).

The Collegiate National Team will play games against Chinese Taipei and Japan on U.S. soil while also making trips to The Netherlands for the Honkbal - Haarlem Baseball Week and to Havana, Cuba for a Friendship Series against Cuba. The Collegiate National Baseball team begins play on June 21 with the Red, White and Blue Tour in various cities across the United States.
