BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

It was an emotional scene in Birmingham's West End neighborhood Wednesday night when family and friends came together to remember a man who gave his life to save his elderly neighbor.

Arthur Mills was shot and killed Sunday trying to protect Yvette Sims' mother from three robbery suspects.

Sims said when she heard the news she was heartbroken.

"When I found out he died that's when I felt like somebody had just stabbed me. I felt like I went down because I knew that a good person had left this world," said Sims.

Police said Mills saw two robbery suspects pull Sims' elderly mother into her home and a third suspect in a vehicle. Investigators say Mills exchanged gunfire with the suspects and was hit. He later died at UAB Hospital.

Neighbor's aren't surprised Mills jumped in to help.

"That's what he would do, and that's what he'd want you to do if it was his mom," said Emma Thomas.

"What he did for Ms. Lockett is nothing that any of us wouldn't have done for each other because we were raised that way. He was raised to protect," said Corrie May.

Neighbors said Mills was the oldest of three boys. His mother and two brothers attended the vigil, listening as neighbors reminisced about all the times Mills helped them.

Sims said she feels if Mills had not intervened, her mother would have been hurt. She says she is heartbroken for his family, especially his mother.

"She had to lose her son over someone else's stuff, that's sad," said Sims.

Hours before the vigil took place, police arrested and charged 22-year-old Davarius McGee with murder in Mills' death. There are still two suspects police have not caught.

Neighbors said they are relieved police caught one of the suspects and said it iss only a matter of time before the other two are caught.
