Body of East Texas woman missing since 2006 found

Shunte Coleman Shunte Coleman

A forensic pathologist examination has determined a body found in San Augustine County in March is that of a woman reported missing in Jacksonville in 2006.

Shunte Coleman, of Jacksonville, had been missing since July 2006. In March, human skeletal remains were found by a forester in a thickly wooded area of San Augustine County, near the intersection of FM 1196 and County Road 347.

A forensic anthropologist from Sam Houston State University examined the remains, extracted DNA, and identified the remains Shunte Coleman.

Coleman's family said in 2006 they feared the worst. At the time, police said Coleman led somewhat of a transient lifestyle, and it make tracking her down difficult.

At the time Coleman went missing, there was speculation that Shunte's disappearance may have been connected to another East Texas woman's disappearance. Police said back then that there was no evidence.

Coleman's death is being investigated by the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Rangers and the FBI.
