New members join Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame

NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction just wrapped up in Natchitoches over the weekend and 11 new athletes will have there names go down in Louisiana history.

Former LSU Tiger and Super Bowl champion Alan Faneca was humbled by this experience.

"Being in the hall of fame you get a greater sense of appreciation for who you are going in there with," he said. "When you see their names on the walls and see their plaques and memorabilia and it makes it even more special."

Unfortunately, New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson couldn't make it to the induction ceremony but he was honored to be inducted into the hall of fame. Saints President Dennis Lauscha accepted the award on his behalf.

"The best thing about Mr. Benson is that he truly is a Louisiana fan and resident and he has touched athletics so much in the state over the last couple of years and we are all so proud of him," Lauscha said.

Legendary track coach Pete Boudreaux had his former athlete Warrick Dunn in the building for support tonight and Louisiana Head Coach Tyler Summitt said his mom Patt Summitt remembers Venus Lacy very well.

"Well the fact that Venus is from Chattanooga, Tennessee it has struck a key with me," Summit said. "I talked to my mom about her today and my mom said she was a black hole. If it went in it wasn't coming out and it was great to see Venus and catch up on old stories."

Lacy said she didn't expect to be at the ceremony herself.

"Did I think I was going to be here? No. My son had to really push me and I needed that push," she said. "People want pictures and I'm like, 'Yea, I'll take a picture.' Who wouldn't? And I'm glad to be here. I'm on the highway to heaven."

Walking through the Louisiana Hall of Fame museum will send chills through your body looking at the history and accomplishments. But this weekend wasn't only about the 11 new members, but about the future generations of Louisiana like Alex Lacy, Venus Lacy's son.

"I'm going to be in there one day," Alex said. "I want to be a hall of famer one day and see if I can accomplish what she accomplished."
