RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (ESPN/FIFA/CNN) -The World Cup match between USA and Portugal came to a thrilling end, Sunday, as the Portuguese came back to stave off elimination.

For the USA, it was a case of so close yet so far.  Now there is all to play for in Group G.

The build-up had been dominated by talk of Portugal's star man Cristiano Ronaldo and his injured knee, but it was his former Manchester Knight teammate, Nani, who gave Portuguese the lead after just five minutes.

The U.S. side didn't give up without a fight. They kept on pressing, and on 64 minutes Jermaine Jones showed Ronaldo how it's done from 22 yards out.

Despite playing with black eyes and a broken nose, Captain America Clint Dempsey didn't stop there.

He put his side within touching distance of the second round with just nine minutes left on the clock, but Portugal knew that defeat would mean the end of the road for their campaign and five minutes into time-added-on, Silvestre Varela made it two-two.

So it's all set up for an incredible climax to Group G on Thursday, with both the USA and Germany on four points, so Klinsmann leads the U.S. against his home nation, knowing they need to avoid defeat to make it to the second round.
