CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) -

The trial of a Southeast Missouri man accused of stabbing a city employee after his water was turned off has been postponed.

Richard Edward Jaworski, 50, of Caruthersville will be committed to the Missouri Department of Mental Health until he is deemed competent to go to trial, according to records filed in Pemiscot County Circuit Court.

Jaworski is accused of stabbing a Caruthersville city employee on June 26, 2014.

Police records stated Jaworski stabbed Elizabeth Hardesty at least 13 times with a large kitchen knife because his water was turned off.

In a probable cause statement, Caruthersville Police Chief Tony Jones said Jaworski walked through the south door of the city hall building and walked to the water department.Jaworski walked past the service counter when he attacked Hardesty, documents state.

The probable cause statement suggested after the attack, a second city employee met Jaworski as he was leaving. Jaworski reportedly threw the knife at a third employee.

The knife was later found on the floor in city hall.

Employees were able to provide a description of the suspect and an officer found him on the front porch of his home. According to the probable cause statement, Jaworski told the officer, "Yeah, I did it."

Caruthersville police charged Jaworski with aggravated assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

Jaworski was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation in September and was given a public defender.
