CARUTHERSVILLE, MO  (KAIT/KFVS) – A southeast Missouri man accused of stabbing a city employee appeared in court Monday on charges of aggravated assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to Caruthersville Police Chief Tony Jones, Richard Edward Jaworski, 50, of Caruthersville, stabbed Elizabeth Hardesty multiple times with a large kitchen knife on June 26, 2014. Jones said Jaworski told officers that he had stabbed the woman because his water was turned off.

Court documents suggest Jaworski was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and he was given a public defender. He will be given another court date once the results from the evaluation are complete.

Jones told Region 8 News that the stabbing happened in the water department’s office. Hardesty was stabbed at least 13 times.

The probable cause statement reported that Jaworski walked through the south door of the city hall building and walked into the water department. He then walked past the service counter when he attacked Hardesty.

Jones said Hardesty underwent surgery Thursday after the stabbing. She is expected to recover.

The probable cause statement suggested that after the attack, Jaworski was met by another city employee as he was leaving and threw the knife at a third employee. The knife was later found on the floor in city hall.

An employee told officers that Jaworski said, "I'll teach you to turn my ******* water off." As he was leaving the building, the employee said he stated, "Call the police, I don't care."

Employees were able to provide a description of the suspect and an officer found him on the front porch of his home. According to the probable cause statement, Jaworski told the officer, "Yeah, I did it."

Jaworski reportedly told the officer he had intended on killing Hardesty.
