Winston-Salem, N.C. (MILB.com) - The Carolina Mudcats stormed back from two deficits and stunned the Winston-Salem Dash 11-9 on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. The clubs combined for 30 hits and five errors in the seesaw battle. The Mudcats improve to 5-5 in the second half, 34-43 overall. The Dash (6-4, 36-43) saw their four-game winning streak end.
Logan Vick, Yandy Diaz, Jeremy Lucas and Alex Monsalve all plated two RBI for the Mudcats. All 18 batters to see the plate came away with a base hit.
Michael Peoples (4-7) was the beneficiary of the gritty comeback. The right-hander held the Dash to an unearned run, despite five hits, across 3 2/3 innings of work in relief. Jacob Lee worked around a single in the ninth to record his second save. Braulio Ortiz (0-8) suffered the loss. The right-hander gave up two inherited runners and allowed one of his own in the pivotal eighth.
Trailing 9-7, the Mudcats went to work against reliever Euclides Leyer. Luigi Rodriguez began the frame with a single to left and advanced to second when Courtney Hawkins bobbled the grounder in the outfield. Jerrud Sabourin drew a walk before Ortiz relieved Leyer.
James Roberts moved the runners over with a bunt for Alex Monsalve. Carolina's backstop lashed a double into the left field corner to score both Rodriguez and Sabourin. Ortiz uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Monsalve to move to third. Logan Vick put the Mudcats up for good with a sac-fly to right.
