Police: Kids left home alone for months

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Jonesboro police are searching for a woman they say left her two sons home alone for several months.

According to an initial police report, on Friday a worker with Agents of Change came to the Jonesboro Police Department to report that two boys, both under the age of 16, appeared to be living by themselves.

Officer Ethan Sanderlin went to Cedar Park Apartments and spoke to the boys who said they “had been staying in the apartment without their mother for the past three months.”

The older boy said his mom was staying in West Helena. He told Sanderlin she would come to Jonesboro every two weeks, buy groceries, then leave for another two weeks.

According to Sanderlin, “there were only a few packages of frozen food in the freezer and the fridge was empty.”

He also noted that it did not appear anyone had been living in the mom’s bedroom.

Sanderlin then spoke with a neighbor, and the apartment’s landlady, who both confirmed the boys’ story.

The landlady said she had seen the children’s mother “a couple of times in the past few months.”

A man, claiming to be the mother’s boyfriend, came to the apartment and told Sanderlin he “watched after” the boys; but, he said he had not checked on the kids since June 25.

The children were turned over to a Department of Children and Family Services worker until the mother could be found.
