Arkansas Senate panel advances keno moratorium

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - A Senate panel has advanced a proposal barring the Arkansas lottery from launching monitor games such as keno until next spring, opting for a moratorium rather than an outright ban on the expanded gambling.

The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee on Tuesday endorsed the proposal prohibiting the lottery from starting the games until March 13, 2015. A House panel advanced an identical proposal Monday.

The move clears the way for the House and Senate to vote Tuesday afternoon on the three issues on the agenda for the special session. Proposals aimed at averting a hike in teacher health insurance premiums and to ease prison overcrowding are also set to go before both chambers Tuesday afternoon.

Legislative leaders hope to wrap up the session early Wednesday morning.
