STODDARD COUNTY, MO  (KAIT) – A Region 8 man was arrested for assaulting a police officer with a sword during an incident Saturday night, according to a news release from the Bernie Police Department.

According to police, Thomas Eggert, 44, of Bernie was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. He’s set to appear in court again July 3, 2014.

The release stated that Officer Roy Boyce responded to a home on West David Street in Bernie Saturday when Eggert claimed to have a sword with him. Eggert also claimed to have turned on the gas and threatened to blow up the home with bombs.

Eggert attacked Boyce with the sword when Boyce entered the home, according to police. The sword was inside a wooden sheath at the time.

When Boyce got the sword away from Eggert, Eggert tried to pull a lighter from his pocket. Boyce grabbed the lighter and arrested Eggert, according to the release.

Eggert was given a $50,000 cash only bond. He’s being held at the Stoddard County Jail.
