LITTLE ROCK (AGFC) – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has been receiving calls from the public about swim beaches closed by the Arkansas Department of Health due to the presence E. coli bacteria. These closures only involve specific swimming areas and not the entire lake. Most of the questions have centered on the safety of eating fish from these lakes.
Fish in these lakes are safe to eat. Proper cleaning and handling is the key. It’s important both to clean and to cook the fish carefully. Always wash your hands after handling raw fish and don’t prepare any other food in the same area without a thorough cleaning first.
E. coli is a type of bacteria that generally lives in the intestines of people and animals. Some E. coli can cause intestinal infection. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever.
