KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities are investigating a carjacking that left a beloved dog named "Mister" dead.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the pooch killer.

Brandon Holmes is like a lot of people - working more than one job just to make ends meet - but it was here along I-35 that he lost not only the car he'd worked so hard for, but a best friend who's irreplaceable.

"He wasn't like a pet, he was like my child, so losing him was a big blow," Holmes said during a phone interview.

Mister, a 4-year-old rat terrier/Chihuahua mix, either died in a four-vehicle crash caused by the carjacker or was shot by the carjacker, according to a Kansas City Police Department report.

The ordeal began about 2:45 a.m. on June 22 at a Shell convenience store in the 3800 block of Broadway.

"We went to a festival that was outdoors and had him with us and we were on our way home when this thing happened," Holmes said.

Mister's owner and a friend had driven to the convenience store. The terrier's owner went inside while the woman and Mister waited in the Nissan Altima.

The suspect had been inside the store and then had hung out at the gas pumps. After a few minutes, the suspect jumped into the driver's side. He stuck a gun in the passenger's face and ordered her to get out.

The suspect then sped off with Mister in the back seat. The carjacking took about six seconds.

"It was tasteless and senseless on his part," Holmes said.

Shortly after that, police responded to a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 near West Pennway. The carjacker was speeding north on the highway and struck other vehicles, police said.

The suspect fled the scene.

Mister was found dead inside the vehicle.

"It is unknown if the dog died from the accident. However, during processing of the vehicle, a shell casing and a spent bullet were found inside the vehicle," according to the news release from police.

"I'm not going to tolerate it. I'm going to do what I can to find him and hold him accountable for what he did," Holmes said.

Detectives are sharing video and pictures of the suspect inside the convenience store in hopes of catching the carjacker.

The suspect was described as a tall black man with long dreadlocks. He was wearing a dark shirt and pants with white sneakers. He was described as 25 to 40 years old.
