Lack of signatures blunts medical marijuana efforts

Posted: Updated:
JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – One group’s efforts to get the legalization of medical marijuana on this year’s November ballot have gone up in smoke.

Arkansans for Compassionate Care stated Monday morning they “will not submit the Arkansas Medical Cannabis Act (AMCA) to the Secretary of State.”

Melissa Fults, campaign director for the AMCA, said volunteers had “worked diligently” to collect signatures. However, the group collected just 80 percent of the required number.

“Our volunteers have done an amazing job,” Fults said. “But we just didn’t have enough time or funding—and we faced some unique challenges—starting with crafting a stronger initiative that protects patients and the state better.”

Fults added that plans to resubmit for 2016 are already underway.
