County clerks certifying alcohol sales petitions in time for Nov. ballot

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – Craighead and Saline county clerks have until July 21, 2014, 10 business days, to verify petition signatures filed by Our Community, Our Dollars.

"We go through a number of different steps to try to verify that person's signature," said Craighead County Clerk Kade Holliday. "We actually set up a module in our voter registration system. What we do is we go manually through each page and verify that that voter is registered to vote here in Craighead County."

Holliday has 20, 956 signatures to review from people who signed the petition saying they want the option to vote on legalizing retail alcohol sales in Craighead County

"If that person is not registered to vote then that's an automatic throw out," he said.

"If they've just maybe moved and they haven't notified us, that person is still registered to vote so that would count. With a birth date there is chance that ourselves or possibly the state entered a birthday wrong, so we'll let that go if the address and the name match. But if there's multiple things off, birthday is off, address is off, then we flag it and that one does not count."

Holliday said the process can be time consuming, but he does not expect to take the full 10 days to finish.

"I'm hopeful that we'll have it done sometime early next week. However, if need be, we will take the full 10 days to make sure the integrity of this is 100% accurate."
