Angel Castro named to PCL All-Star Team

MEMPHIS (MemphisRedbirds.com) – In conjunction with the Pacific Coast League, Memphis Redbirds pitcher Angel Castro has been named to replace pitcher Jimmy Nelson of the Nashville Sounds on the Pacific Coast League All-Star roster.

Castro will join outfielder Stephen Piscotty to represent the Redbirds on 30-man PCL All-Star team that takes on the International League stars in the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.

Nelson, who was recalled by the Milwaukee Brewers today to start Saturday’s game against St. Louis at Miller Park, was the top vote-getter among PCL players and pegged to start for the PCL in the contest after leading the circuit in all three pitching Triple Crown categories.

Castro has pitched in 18 games (14 starts) with the Redbirds this season, going 7-5 with a 3.38 ERA (32er/85.1ip) and 53 strikeouts. The Dominican Republic native ranks fifth in the league in ERA, seventh in WHIP (1.18), and eighth in average against (.243, 79-for-325).

The All-Star nod is the first honor for Castro in his nine-year professional career. The 31-year-old pitcher signed with the Cardinals as a free agent in December.

Piscotty – who was selected as a reserve outfielder for the contest by the PCL office last week – is batting .303 (100-for-330) with six home runs, 25 doubles, 51 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in a team-leading 89 games played for the Redbirds.

The 2014 Triple-A All-Star game will be broadcast live on MLB Network as well as on the radio on Sports 56 WHBQ at 6:05 p.m. CDT.
