Extra layer of security coming to Mandeville

Updated:
ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

On a hot summer day, there's no shortage of people enjoying the many parks and bikes trails Mandeville has to offer.

"We come out here every day and there's always lots of families out here," says Katie Stutson.

At the Mandeville Trailhead, surveillance cameras are mounted throughout the park, but none of them are actually working.

"We had an old system that was put in 10 or 12 years ago and they just slowly died over the years," says Capt. Ron Ruple with the Mandeville Police.

Capt. Ruple says the cameras were a big help years ago helping to solve all sorts of crimes.

Now, the Mandeville Council approved a contract with Convergint Technologies to provide the equipment and services needed to replace the old cameras plus add new ones.

"This was an opportunity to replace those and there's been some additional parks that have been built so we have some additional locations where we can put those cameras," says Capt. Ruple.

A state grant will cover $200,000 of the cost and the city will pay $85,000.

The cameras won't be constantly monitored, but investigators will be able to refer to the video if a crime occurs.

People enjoying the Lakefront look forward to the extra layer of security.

Mandeville city leaders say about 30 cameras will be placed in several places that include parks and the new fishing pier.

Those cameras are expected to be working in the next three months.
