JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Johnson Avenue in Jonesboro was backed up almost a half a mile Saturday morning.
But the congestion was not the result of an accident.
Greater Dimensions World Outreach Ministries was giving away free $10 gas cards at the Citgo station.
Pastor C.A. Turner said he thought giving away free gas would bring a lot of people together and that it did. People showed up to the gas station four hours early for the 11 a.m. giveaway, and in 30 minutes, all of the gas cards were gone.
"We believe that somebody's life can be changed,” Turner said. “That's what it's all about. It's not about just giving away free gas. This is a vehicle we're using just to open the door for salvation."
Pastor Turner said his church gave away almost 70 gas cards, or $700 in gas.
Greater Dimensions also handed out about 70 Bibles and free snacks and drinks.
"The whole vision of this was to show the love of God,” Turner said. “Every time Jesus got ready to do something for somebody spiritually, he used material means to meet their needs to open up that spiritual opportunity. Now if you give them free gas, they're willing to listen about salvation. They're like, 'You're giving me free gas. Tell me about your God.' So we're excited and pumped for Jesus."
Pastor Turner wanted to thank everyone who came out Saturday, especially the Jonesboro Police Department for directing traffic.
Pastor Turner said Greater Dimensions hopes to sponsor another gas giveaway soon since the response was so positive.
