Last week, A Better Region 8 focused on a big decision facing A-State. They're considering an offer from the St. Louis Sports Commission to move the 2015 football game against SEC opponent Mizzou to St. Louis.
It is our stance that the game should stay here in Jonesboro to support fans and local businesses.
A-State reached out to us, and here is what they had to say. "While A-State's excellence in the Sun Belt the past three years is without question - three league football titles and back-to-back bowl victories - the Red Wolves' budget is among the lowest in the country. The improvements at Centennial Bank Stadium like the new video board and renovations at the Convocation Center are for our fans, but these have substantial costs. As one of the key economic engines for the region, A-State knows bringing four to ten thousand visiting fans - and their tourism dollars - to Jonesboro is important. So does the city of St. Louis, who is respecting the value of the game with a substantial offer to bring A-State fans to Busch Stadium. This is not a decision to be made quickly, and we will listen to all our fans." That's A State's opinion.
While we still think the game should be here and the benefits to the community, the fans and even the university will be long-lasting, I think it's also important to understand both sides.
Both sides of this issue are listening and making a quality decision based on all the facts will make this A Better Region 8.
