SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A man wanted on a rape charge punched a cop in the face and spit at police before he was arrested for a robbery that had just occurred.

Police responded to Ken's Parking Lot at 73 Taylor St. about 7 p.m. Monday after a victim reported an unarmed robbery. The victim, who was the parking attendant, told police a Hispanic male approached him just as he was about to leave work and asked him for a cigarette, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The attendant told the man he didn't have a cigarette, but that didn't satisfy the suspect.

"I don't care what you give me, you're going to give me something. Money? Your wallet? If you don't give it, I will take it from you," the suspect said to the victim.

The suspect, who was later identified as Miguel Valentin, 32 of 769 Worthington St. Springfield, then attacked the parking attendant and fled the scene with a customer's car key, Delaney said.

Police spotted Valentin in front of Kimball Towers, located at 140 Chestnut St., but he fled towards downtown. Officers chased Valentin on foot for several minutes before another officer intercepted him with his cruiser near 135 Dwight St., Delaney said.

Valentin ran up to the police car and punched an officer in the face through the window. He then attempted to run, but was tackled by police. Officers were able to handcuff him, but he was spitting at them as they took him into custody, Delaney said.

Officers recovered the stolen key from Valentin following his arrest.

Police charged Valentin with unarmed robbery, and assault and battery on a police officer. He was also charged on an arrest warrant for rape, and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14 years old, according to an arrest report.

Valentin was held overnight and arraigned in Springfield District Court Tuesday.
