Holyoke Geriatric to end adult daycare services

Posted: Updated:

It has been two months since the doors were permanently locked at the Holyoke Geriatric Authority.

It was shutdown in May due to lack of funding.

Now, the hallways are dark and silent. Equipment sits unused.

The only people inside on Wednesday night were the board members as they discuss their next move of action after being told by a federal court they could not file for bankruptcy.

"We now have to go to Plan B, C, D. I don't know how many they're going to be," chairman Charles Glidden said.

He said the board will not appeal the courts decision, instead they will look at selling the place.

"If we can, find someone out there that might want to buy a lot of the assets," Glidden said.

However, that option may not follow through because of property regulations.

"We're kind of restricted because of the agency that we are. The city council will have the final say on the sale," Glidden explained

If the city disapproves of the sale, Glidden said the next option would be to declare a receivership.

"The state court would then appoint somebody to come in, oversee the assets, sell as much as they can and be as fair as they possible can to the creditors," Glidden said.

Also on Wednesday's agenda, the authority's adult daycare.

It has been running in a separate building on the property since the residential closer.

But like the fate of the nursing home, the daycare program will also come to an end.

"The adult daycare will be closed by the end of August," Glidden said.

He continued to say that process is a whole different agency, but sees the closing procedure to be similar to that of the residential unit.

"They will look to see where slots are available in other places. Hopefully somebody in Holyoke will get up and running because Holyoke needs one and deserves one," Glidden said.

Letters will be sent out to families of those who attend the daycare notifying them of the closing.

The board plans to meet on July 31 at 5:30 p.m. at the facility's Lower Westfield Road location.
