Jonesboro, AR -- Kathy Morris Reports

Runoff Election Polls Open Tuesday Morning

November 22, 2004 -- Posted at: 9:45pm CST

JONESBORO, AR - Two weeks of early voting came down to the final few minutes for a few voters Monday night, before the polls open for Runoff Election Tuesday.

"The early voting has gone real smooth. We've had over 4,000, probably about 4,100, 4,200," said Nancy Nelms, Craighead County Clerk.

Many of the procedures for the runoff are the same as they were for the general election. You report to the same polling place to vote, and you need to take a photo identification with you, but don't worry about taking your voter registration card.

Nelms explained a little-known fact, "Now I've had people ask me if they didn't vote in the general, could they vote in the runoff, and yes they can."

That's right. As long as you registered to vote 30 days prior to November 23rd, then you may vote in the runoff. Unlike during the general election, registered voters who are overseas will not be able to participate in the runoff election.

"Well, they didn't have time to get overseas ballots there and back in the limited amount of time that we had, because they couldn't even start printing the ballots until the day after the election," Nelms added.

One ballot counting machine was serviced last week. Nancy Nelms said now everything is ready to go for the runoff. Polls are open from 7:30am-7:30pm. If you have any questions regarding Tuesday's runoff election in Craighead County, you may call County Clerk Nancy Nelms at 933-4520.
