JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A rash of car break-ins took place over the weekend. According to Jonesboro Police reports, four of them happened close to each other. There were 12 total between Friday and Sunday.
Jonesboro resident, Pam Huffer, told Region 8 she was one of four in her neighborhood who had her car broken into.
“Our neighbor right next door was broken into and a neighbor right on the corner was broken into,” said Huffer. “I think there was a couple right around the corner that was broken into and then there were some over in Fernwood.”
Lt. Steve McDaniel with the Jonesboro Police Department told Region 8 a few of the break-ins didn’t require much force.
“They were just unlocked vehicles,” he said. “The suspect entered the vehicle, went through the belongings, took the valuables they wanted and then left.”
However, there were some cases that involved the suspect breaking into a window. McDaniel suggests taking out the garage door opener of the car before leaving on vacations.
“Criminals don't have to be very smart to know that they just have to push a button to have access into a home,” said McDaniel.
Summertime is always a prime time for break-ins. McDaniel recommends that if you are going out of town make sure to make the home look as if someone is there. Also, have a trusted neighbor help keep watch while you're away.
