Jonesboro -- Heather Flanigan Reports

Getting A Job Could Be Easier Than You Think

November 23, 2004 – Posted at 6:14 p.m. CST

JONESBORO -- You go to school, you jump through the hoops and you get your degree. Now you're ready for the real world...but landing that first job out of college can be the hardest. But snagging that perfect job may be easier than you think.

“I don't feel like there will be a job waiting for me. I think you really have to hunt,” said ASU Senior Emily Ingram.

Ingram will be graduating in May and she's already hunting for a job. The Television Broadcast major says she’s worried about the search.

“I think you're really going to have to work for it and show the employers that your willing to work to get a job,” said Ingram.

She's spending her Thanksgiving break studying and working on her resume.

“The stresses of being a senior are pretty heavy, not only are you worried about getting a job after you graduate, you still got classes to really do well in,” said Ingram.

But for students like Ingram, finding the perfect job may be easier than you think. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that college recruitment is up 13%.

“In our current economy, to get the talent that they want, they have to strike early, they have to be quick, and we've have been producing some very sharp graduates,” said ASU Career Services Director Neal Vickers.

Nationwide recruiters say a large number of baby boomers will be retiring this year, leaving a large opening of vacant for laid off workers, or recent college graduates.

“What we are experiencing is very encouraging. We noticed a 30% increase in our campus recruiting visits this fall here at ASU, and a 5% increase in our participation in the job fair,” said Vickers.

Students and even alumni are able to get help at the ASU Career Services, on everything from resumes to job interviews.

“We've done a lot of coaching to people, helped them with their resumes, their interviews. We’ve helped them get vested into the job search process,” said Vickers.

And it's one service students are taking advantage of.

“We have over 4,000 registered in our database, which is the highest number we've ever had in the 12 years that I've been here,” said Vickers.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers says some of the hottest jobs going right now are in the fields of marketing, chemical engineering and business administration.
