COLDWATER, MI (WOOD/CNN) – A woman is safe after being held hostage for hours at this adult novelty store in southern Michigan.
Officials say it all started Tuesday morning with a robbery at a drug store 20 miles away in Angola, IN. The suspect then led police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 69 into Michigan.
They reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour before the suspect stopped the car and ran into the Lion’s Den Adult Store, taking one employee hostage.
Police say the employee handled the situation well. She was able to text a friend about what was going on and even negotiated with the suspect.
"Her friend, who then would call central dispatch 911, keeping her friends and 911 appraised of his mood, his spirits while he's in there and she's...she did a great job of talking to him and keeping him calm and he bonded with her right away, had an immediate connection," Michigan State Police Lt. Dave Wood said.
Police were eventually able to convince the suspect to turn himself in.
No one was hurt.
