Rape suspect now charged with child pornography

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A Region 8 man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl now faces charges of child pornography.

On Monday, July 14, Jonesboro police arrested Steven Wayne Thorpe, 41, on charges of sexual assault.

According to the first probable cause affidavit, the 7-year-old victim told police Thorpe removed her clothing and “touched her” on numerous occasions.

Investigators submitted a second affidavit to District Court Judge Keith Blackman on Tuesday, July 22.

The court document stated while investigating the sexual assault a witness told detectives Thorpe had “sexually explicit and/or inappropriate photographs of the sexual assault victim” on his cell phone.

Detectives obtained the phone and showed it to the witness who positively identified it as Thorpe’s. According to the affidavit, the phone’s wallpaper included a photo of Thorpe with his name on it.

After receiving a search warrant to forensically examine the phone, Detective Brandon King reportedly found a “large number of images” of child pornography or children involved in sexually explicit activity.

Court documents indicate Thorpe was arrested on May 15 in Poinsett County for rape. The victim in that case was also a juvenile, the report stated. At the time of his latest arrest, Thorpe was free on bond.

Thorpe is currently being held at the Craighead County Detention Center.
