SPRINGFIELD, TN (WSMV) -

In the areas around Music City, instruments are everything. For many, they're not just a passion but a livelihood.

Now, one local musician says a theft of 17 guitars has left him devastated.

"I've been in music pretty much the greatest part of my entire life," said Marty Pelto. "The best experience is the feeling that you get when someone's really enjoying your performance."

Lead guitarist for local bands Snow Black Sunday and Dead Hollywood Stuntman, Pelto said music is the only thing he ever truly wanted to do. Living out that passion in Nashville, Pelto even won a shredding contest to open for Steve Vai.

His Robertson County home far away from the noise of the stage, the spot on Highway 76 E was the scene of a crime that's hit Pelto hard.

"Everybody tells me it sounds like an inside job or someone that I knew," said Pelto. "I truthfully don't believe that. It could've been anybody, and unfortunately, it was me."

Pelto said sometime last week, someone managed to get inside his garage and steal a dirt bike, an iMac, and worst of all, 17 guitars including a Gibson and five Les Pauls.

"I had a custom Warmoth that was my baby," said Pelto. "I've had it since the 90s."

Estimating the thefts at $30,000, Pelto said the money lost isn't the main issue. Instead, it's hard to see something taken so important in his life.

"I don't think they care, you know," said Pelto. "I don't think that's the point. They just need the money, evidently, for other reasons."

Pelto said the crime isn't doing anything to stop him from living out his passion.

"If you can reach one person, even if it's one person in the crowd, that's what makes it worth everything," said Pelto.

He just hopes sharing his story can get the guitars back in his hands and up on the stage where they belong.

"Hopefully, someone will have seen it or know somebody who knows about it, and through word of mouth, we'll track down what happened," said Pelto.

If you have any information on the guitars or other items stolen, please contact the Robertson County Sheriff's Department.
