FLORENCE, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An Arizona man convicted of a double murder in Tucson was executed by a lethal injection in a reportedly grueling process that lasted almost two hours.

The State Attorney General says Joseph Rudolph Wood, 55, died in Florence just before 4 p.m., nearly two hours after the execution process started at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence on Wednesday.

His attorneys filed for an emergency motion to stop it, saying he was still gasping for air an hour later. The execution was already delayed a few hours while the state supreme court considered a last-minute attempt to stay the execution.

That appeal was based in part on questions about the drugs being used.

Wood was convicted of killing his estranged girlfriend and her father in 1989. Police said Wood and his 29-year-old ex-girlfriend, Debbie Dietz, had an unstable relationship for about five years.

Wood walked into the body shop owned by Dietz's family on Aug. 7, 1989, and fatally shot Dietz's father, 55-year-old Gene Dietz, in the chest. Gene's brother reportedly tried to stop Wood but was pushed away as Wood found Debbie, put her in a hold, then fatally shot her in the abdomen and chest. He then fled the scene.

Wood was convicted on Feb. 25, 1991, and sentenced to death on July 2, 1991.
