Details about Thompson's death emerge at press conference

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

On Wednesday, a big break everyone's been waiting for Gulfport police reveal the name of the man accused of the murder of Janaya Thompson.

"Today at approximately 2:45 p.m. we charged Alberto Julio Garcia, who resides at 10480 Kline Road with capital murder for the death of Janaya Thompson," said Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania.

Several new details in her death were released at the press conference.

Chief Papania says Thompson wasn't only strangled she was also sexually assaulted after being brought to a vacant mobile home on Whitney Drive in Gulfport.

The suspect accused of her assault and death is 29-year-old Alberto Julio Garcia. He was arrested July 18 just two days after Janaya went missing.

He was initially a person of interest along with 31-year-old Julian Casper Gray.

Gray still remains behind bars as a person of interest. Both Gray and Garcia were actually residents at the same apartment as the 5-year-old victim. Papania says they were also acquaintances.

"There has been considerable amount of evidence which will be subjected to forensic examination. This is important and will take some time," said Papania.

Gulfport Police Public Information Officer Sergeant Damon McDaniel says he's proud of the work Gulfport police officers have put in on finding the capital murder suspect.

"I think that the community will be, I don't know what else to call it, they will be relieved that we're still out here doing what we can do to make this city a safe place to live in," said McDaniel.

Chief Papania says the community has given his department lots of information that investigators are continuing to examine. Police also say she was outside at the time Thompson went missing.

The FBI office out of Gulfport is assisting in this investigation. Garcia was initially arrested for a burglary while Gray was arrested for rape of a woman.

Garcia is scheduled to be at the courtroom in the Harrison County Jail at 8 a.m. this coming Friday.
