Farmers' markets gaining popularity in Middle TN

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Nashville farmers' market is bustling. This is a place to find that hard-to-find heirloom tomato or rare squash, but it's hardly the only game in town.

There are now more than a dozen farmers' markets in Davidson County, and 70 across Middle Tennessee.

The Bellevue farmers' market is just one season old, but already it has grown from four vendors to 20 vendors. Across town, the Donelson farmers' market is going strong.

Monday night is the only night in Davidson County without a farmers' market.

"It's just better, better tasting, much fresher than when it gets to the supermarket, it's gone through so many hands. This is coming right from the field right to you. I just love it," said Deborah Armstrong.

Tennessee farmers love it. Pick Tennessee Products has been monitoring the farmers' market growth spurt.

Everyone knows that fresh fruits and vegetables taste better, but there is more to it.

"Buying local not only helps the small family farms, but you're able to help your local economy because that money is going directly back into your neighborhood," said Amy Tavelin, farmers' market specialist with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

Farmers' markets also create community gathering places to see neighbors, and don't forget fresh fruits and vegetables have way more nutritional value. There's also something fun about knowing the person who grows your food.

Pick Tennessee Products has an app that will show you the closest farmers' market and pick your own farm. Click here for more information.
