JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A Jonesboro woman was arrested Saturday, July 26, after police say she left her two babies home alone.
Sharonda Lopez, 25, is charged with two counts of first degree child endangerment.
According to the initial police report, an officer was dispatched to Lopez’s home in the 1800-block of Self Circle shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday.
When the officer arrived, no one was home.
A short time later Lopez reportedly “came around the corner” and said had gone to a gas station located on East Johnson.
Lopez told the officer she was gone “20 minutes.” Before going to the store, Lopez said she had left the children alone while she checked on a neighbor, the report stated.
The officer noted Lopez was not sweating and showed no signs that she had been “walking or running in a fast manner to come home to her children.”
Once inside the home, the officer stated he found two children, ages 1 and 2, sleeping in a bed together. The children appeared “unharmed,” according to the report.
The officer contacted the Department of Children and Family Services and advised them of the situation.
While waiting for a DCFS employee to arrive, several family members came to the home. However, they were unable to decide what to do with the children, the report stated.
When the DCFS employee arrived, she said the children would be placed in foster care. She also gave the family members information on the steps required to take custody of the children.
The DCFS worker also took a urine sample from Lopez which, according to the police report, “came back positive for THC.”
Lopez reportedly told the officer she had smoked marijuana two weeks ago. She is currently four months pregnant.
The officer arrested Lopez and took her to the Craighead County Detention Center where a hold was placed on her pending a probable cause hearing on Monday, July 28.
