New safety protection for four-legged officer

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - The Paragould Police Department will soon be receiving additional safety protection for a valued member of their team.

The department recently received approval for a grant for a ballistic vest for their K9 dog, Duex. This vest will protect their four legged crime fighter from bullets and stabbings. Corporal Jack Hailey says Duex needs the same protection as any officer, especially since he’s sometimes the first officer inside.

“We don't go out without our vests so we were very happy to hear that now he kind of has that same protection,” said Hailey. “If there's someone barricaded or someone under a house or something like that or in an attic, rather than sending an officer up there, Officer Boling will send Duex in.”

Since becoming certified in narcotics in March, Duex has assisted in 45 drug related arrests. Duex is working on his certification in evidence retrieval and tracking.
