Train Derails in Crittenden County

NOVEMBER 26, 2004 - Posted at 1:36 p.m. CST

MARION, AR - A Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train derailed last night neary Highway 77 in Marion.

Nobody was injured, but the accident left a portion of the roadway closed Friday.

The Marion Fire Department arrived at the scene about 10:30 last night and found one of the six derailed cars labeled as carrying hazardous material.

It had at some point carried anhydrous ammonia, but Chief Woody Wheeless said the tanker's manifest said it was empty and free of any residue and, as a precaution, a firefighter entry team also made sure there had been no leaks.

The department remained on the scene until about 1 a.m., then turned the scene over to the railroad authorities.
