LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Pct. 1 Constable Tom Selman arrested a 17-year-old Lufkin man on Friday after he and another suspect who had a gun allegedly went to an apartment complex on John Redditt Drive on July 19 and attempted to rob two people in one of the units there.

Deedrick Davonne Renfro is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery, a Class misdemeanor charge of tampering with identification numbers, and a Class misdemeanor charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon. Collectively, his bail has been set at $80,000.

According to the arrest affidavit, a Lufkin Police officer responded to a report of shots fired at the High Point Plaza apartment complex located at 3507 N. John Redditt Drive at approximately 11:40 p.m. When the officer arrived on the scene, he talked to the complainant and a witness.

The complainant told the officer that he and the female witness were in their apartment when someone knocked on the door. When the victim opened the door, he noticed two black men. According to the affidavit, one of the men pointed a chrome-colored revolver at the victim and the other one said, “Give me your money.”

The victim immediately grabbed the gun and tried to take it from the man, the affidavit stated. While the complainant and the man with the gun were struggling, the other suspect approached, so he pushed the first suspect into the second one. Both men fell to the ground, and one of them lost his cap in the process.

At that point, the suspect with the gun pointed it toward the ground and fired it, the affidavit. The complainant told police that the two men then ran off toward John Redditt Drive.

The complainant provided the police with detailed descriptions of the two suspects, along with the clothing they were wearing during the attempted armed robbery.

According to the affidavit, the woman that had been in the apartment when the alleged incident occurred told police that she saw her roommate answer the door and start struggling with two men. The woman told police that she heard the gunshot but claimed she never saw the weapon.

Both of the apartment’s residents told police they did not know the suspects or why they approached them in the manner they did.

Two LPD officers attempted to find the bullet that was fired from the weapon, but they were unable to do so, the affidavit stated. When LPD officers talked to several of the neighbors, who said they didn’t witness the incident, but they did hear the gunshot.

After a Lufkin Police detective was assigned to the case, the witness came to the police department and claimed that she had identified one of the suspects. According to the affidavit, she explained that she and the complainant talked to their neighbors , and two of them recognized one of the men as Dee Renfro.

The woman told police that she and her friend looked up Dee Renfro’s Facebook page and said he was wearing the same red Chicago Bulls cap that had been left at the scene after the attempted bank robbery.

When the complainant talked to the detective at the police department, he claimed that the man they identified as Renfro was the one who said, “Give me your money,” the affidavit stated. He also told the LPD officers that he knew where the bullet had hit.

Lufkin Police officers went back out to the scene on July 25, and they took pictures of the bullet hole. The bullet was recovered, and the bullets and the photos were turned in as evidence.

The LPD detective found a mug shot of Renfro from May 28, and showed it to the complainant and the witness. They identified him as one of the men who tried to rob them, the affidavit stated.

According to Pct. 1 Constable Tom Selman, Renfro was arrested at approximately 1 a.m. Friday. At the time, Renfro was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old juvenile, who was also taken into custody. Selman stopped the juvenile for a traffic violation.

Selman said he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the juvenile was asked about the marijuana, he admitted that he had been smoking it and that he had more in his pocket, the constable said.

Two TABC agents were with Selman when he made the traffic stop on the pickup. one of the agents allegedly found a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol with a partially obliterated serial number near the driver.

When Renfro and another passenger were asked to leave the vehicle, a loaded .380-caliber pistol was found under the back seat where Renfro had been sitting, Selman said. The constable said the serial number had been removed from that weapon as well.

Selman said they believe both pistols were stolen.

The juvenile driver was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and was transported to the Angelina County Juvenile Detention Center. The second juvenile was found to be a juvenile and was taken by Lufkin PD officers to the police department, so he could be turned over to his parents.
