JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Valley View Fire Department has received a $100,482 grant from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security.
The Assistance to Firefighter grant will allow the department to purchase personal protective clothing and new breathing equipment.
This is the first time a grant has been awarded to this department. Fire Chief Jeremy White said this grant will give them the protection they need to better serve the community.
"We are purchasing breathing apparatus to let us go into house fires and be protected better as well as our personal protection equipment coats, boots, helmets, gloves head to toe," White told Region 8 News. He said it's been 4 years since they bought any new equipment. The new gear will give firemen a peace of mind when called out to a fire.
"The temperatures that we can go into is a lot higher than previously with our old gear," he said. "We're able to do more, we have more protection when we go into a house fire or go in to rescue somebody."
White said they expect to receive the new gear in 3 to 5 weeks. He is also looking to recruit at least 15 more volunteers.
