FOREST FALLS, CA (CNN) - As many as 500 children at a church camp may be trapped after torrential rain and mudslides cut off and shut down the southern California town.

Officials say they've made contact with the children and adults at the camp, and they are all safe and not impacted by flooding.

Authorities have been using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to try to reach them.

Elsewhere in San Bernardino County, one person died when their car was swept off a rood by the flooding in the area. There are reports of others missing.

The San Bernardino Fire Department says most of the roads are impassable because of mudflows. The local fire station even had to be evacuated.

The fire chief says some roads are now covered with six to eight feet of rock.

Firefighters expect to be working the scene for the next three to four days.
