South Carolina Gamecocks RB Mike Davis wanted to transfer

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A conversation with his older brother prevented South Carolina Gamecocks running back Mike Davis from transferring out of USC during his freshman year.

The junior player said the depth chart at South Carolina during his first season almost pushed him to pursue other schools.

"Being a third-string was one of the most frustrating things ever," said Davis.

Davis, of course, was behind former running backs Marcus Lattimore and Kenny Miles on the depth chart.

Davis credits his older brother, former Clemson running back James Davis, for helping him stay at South Carolina.

"He always told me to be patient because my time was coming," said Davis. "He's just always got my head on the right track."

"He just kept pushing me, telling me you don't want to leave, this is great for you, actually. Competing with Brandon Wilds is going to do nothing but bring out the best in you."

Luckily for the younger Davis, his decision to stay turned out to be a wise choice.

After Lattimore left the Gamecocks to pursue his NFL dreams, Davis became the starter and a crucial piece of the Gamecocks offense. He also quickly made a name for himself in the SEC and in the college football world, rushing for 1,183 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.

Davis is also in consideration for the Heisman Trophy this year. However, Davis says he's not too focused on that with his team in also in the hunt for an SEC East title this season.

"I always hear the Heisman talk, actually, from either teammates or coaches. They're always getting on me about that," said Davis. "That's irritating a little bit."
