PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A judge has ruled that Jodi Arias can represent herself in the upcoming penalty phase of her murder trial.

The 34-year-old Arias could face the death penalty for killing her ex-boyfriend in his suburban Phoenix bathroom six years ago in a jealous rage.

She was convicted of murder last year, but the jury was deadlocked on whether she should get life in prison or the death penalty. A new trial to determine the sentence is scheduled to begin Sept. 8.

Arias told the judge Monday of her intentions to act as her own lawyer. Judge Sherry Stephens granted the request.

It means she would face prosecutor Juan Martinez by herself.

It was the second time in a week the convicted killer was back in court. On Wednesday morning, she and her lawyers discussed procedural matters.

Her next court date is scheduled for Aug. 13.
