Many say "ignorance is bliss" to avoid doctor visits

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -According to an article from National Public Radio, many people refuse to go to the doctor to avoid hearing bad news.

"My dad, he would probably refuse to go the doctor and probably rather be sick," said Jonathan Clayton. "He doesn't want to know anything is wrong with him."

It's called the ostrich effect. It's based on the old myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when they're scared. However, Dr. Shane Speights with St. Bernards said avoiding annual check-up's can be detrimental to the body.

"It's paramount that patients actually go and get annual exams because really what you don't know can hurt you, or can in fact kill you," he said.

Staying on top of your health and annual exams can detect things like cancer early on.

"You certainly don't want to wait until it's too late and you've got some large cancer in your belly, when really you could have been screened or evaluated years earlier," said Speights.

It's not just cancer that screenings can detect. Simple check-up's can prevent other life threatening illnesses.

"Just to get the blood pressure checked, blood sugar checked and make sure that everything is running normally," said Speights.
