JONESBORO (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State University men's basketball head coach John Brady announced this Thursday (Aug. 7) the addition of transfer guard Devin Carter to the Red Wolves' program.
Carter, who will sit out the 2014-15 season due to the NCAA Transfer Rules, arrives to A-State from Kent (Ohio) State and will have two years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2015-16 campaign.
“Devin is a very versatile player who can play any perimeter position,” said Brady, who starts his seventh year at A-State this 2014-15 season. “He's an extremely good passer and can drive it to the goal. Devin is a good enough perimeter shooter to keep a defender honest.
“I watched him this summer at (Jerry) Mullen Sports Camp and really liked his skill level. I believe he will be a very good player in the Sun Belt Conference,” added Brady.
The 6-4, 210-pound backcourt player averaged 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 0.2 steals per contest in 13 games while playing an average of 7.2 minutes per contest (94 minutes) for Kent State in the 2013-14 season. Carter, a native of Champaign, Ill., also connected on 80.0 percent (8-10) of his free throw attempts and started in contests versus Princeton (Dec. 31) and Bowling Green (Feb. 12). Carter's top performance for the Golden Flashes occurred in the season opener against Ohio Northern (Nov. 8) in which he scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
Carter spent the 2012-13 season at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., and helped lead head coach Cedric Brown's team to a 19-11 overall record. Carter averaged a team-leading 17.5 points an outing to rank 56th among the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national leaders and his 491 points scored was 76th best nationally. Carter also totaled per game averages of 5.3 rebounds (149), 2.5 assists (70), and 1.8 steals (49) while shooting 40.4 percent (156-386) from the floor, 34.1 percent (44-129) from three-point field goal range, and 75 percent (135-180) at the free throw stripe. He earned both Freshman of the Year and first-team accolades for Region 24 along with receiving All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC) First-Team honors following the 2012-13 season. Carter was also a nominee for the 2012-13 GRAC Player of the Year Award.
Carter, who averaged 17.0 points per game as a senior in the 2011-12 season, earned All-Big 12 Conference First-Team recognition and was named to The News-Gazette All-Area First Team which encompasses the East Central Illinois area.
