JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Region 8 schools should be back in session by next week, and bus drivers have an important message for the community: pay attention.
Arkansas schools are working to raise awareness of school bus safety. Transportation Director for the Jonesboro Public School system Mickey Long said there is one major problem drivers always seem to encounter.
"When the school bus is stopped with it's sign out and the red lights flashing, it is against the law to pass that school bus. And that's the most important thing. That's probably our biggest issue, people running our red lights on the school busses," said Long. "And you know, we just want to bring awareness and let everybody know that that is the most dangerous thing you can do is run around a school bus."
Long also said she knows everyone is in a hurry in the mornings and there are a lot of distractions out there, but hopes motorists will focus on paying attention.
Remember, if you are traveling on a road with four lanes and come across the path of a school bus, you are still supposed to stop. It doesn't matter that there are extra lanes to the side, all four lanes of traffic are supposed to stop until the bus is back in motion.
