BATESVILLE, Ark. (LyonScots.com) – For the first time since 1951, Lyon College will be fielding a football team when 72 players are expected to report to camp today (Wednesday) and take to the practice field for a 6:45 p.m. practice.
Lyon College head football coach Kirk Kelley said he's excited about the rebirth of the program. The Scots will host two intrasquad scrimmages this fall (Sept. 13 and Oct. 18 at Batesville High School's Pioneer Stadium) and then begin intercollegiate play in the fall of 2015 as part of the Central States Football League.
Much of the opening day will be issuing equipment, signing the necessary paperwork that needs to be done, attending meetings and going through a photo session for individual players.
The team will then step on to the newly built Lyon College football practice field (located behind Scots Baseball Field) for the first time and begin molding the product that is still a little over a year away from playing foreign competition.
The opening workout will be in shorts and helmets only.
The team will work out Thursday (2-4 p.m.) and Friday (6-7:30 a.m.) in helmets before taking the weekend off for Lyon's Welcome Weekend and then go at it again Monday (6-7:30 a.m.). The Scots will strap on their shoulder pads on Tuesday for the first time (3:30-5 p.m.)
Kelley said the community seems very excited about what's about to happen.
"I don't know how many people have called me and asked if they can come watch practice," the coach stated. "I've told them they most certainly can! We'd love to have anyone out to watch these kids work because we know they're going to work hard each and every day to get better."
Kelley said the opening practice will only be about an hour in length. "We just had to get on the field for the first day. These kids are really pumped and so are we."
