Man charged following deadly wreck in Pocahontas

POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 man is charged in the death of a woman killed during a car crash in Pocahontas.

According to Pocahontas police, 28-year-old Nicholas Hopkins is charged with negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and careless and prohibited driving.

Police said officers approached Hopkins on August 2 as he was attempting to drive a car to Five River Medical Center. According to a news release, officers told Hopkins not to drive after they smelled alcohol.

Officers were then called to Fiver Rivers Medical Center because of a disturbance caused by Hopkins.

Hopkins said he was going to leave the hospital and drive home.

Shortly after, officers were then called out to a wreck on Pyburn extended. Police said a vehicle, driven by Hopkins, hit a tree. A passenger in that vehicle, Amanda Byrley, was pronounced dead.

Another passenger was in the vehicle as well, but Region 8 News does not know his condition.

A bond hearing for Hopkins is scheduled for this week.
