Marshall renames field after iconic alum

MARSHALL, TX (KSLA) - The Marshall community in East Texas wants everyone to know how much they love their iconic alum, Y.A. Tittle.

The Marshall Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to rename the high school's athletic field house to the "Y.A. Tittle Athletic Fieldhouse."

Mays athletic director and head football coach Clint Harper said it's a great honor.

"It's something Marshall is very proud of," he said. "It's an honor to have played here and now Coach where Mr. Tittle played."

Harper grew up idolizing the quarterback the athletic fieldhouse will now be renamed for.

"Coming back and coaching here is an honor. It was always a dream of mine but then to play quarterback here and know the legend of Y.A. Tittle makes it even more special," he said.

Harper said they get recruiters at Marshall all the time who say, before they ever ask about a specific kid is, "I didn't know Y.A. Tittle was from Marshall."

Tittle graduated from Marshall in 1944. He went on to star at Louisiana State University before continuing his playing career in the NFL for another 17 years.

Over 17 seasons he starred for the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers and ultimately the New York Giants before his retirement in 1964.

Harper said it's important they rename the football fieldhouse in honor of Y.A. Tittle now.

"We talked about at the school board it's a living memory right now," he said. "And, as of course if you've read the SportsCenter/ESPN article, you know Mr. Tittle is in poor health right now and so this is something we want to do for him as a living tribute."

Tittle finished with 2,427 career completions for 33,070 yards and 242 touchdowns. He led the Giants to three division titles in 1961-63, and was a two-time NFL Most Valuable Player (1961, 1963). He also played in six Pro Bowls.

Tittle was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in 1971. He lives in San Francisco, but has still continued to visit Marshall over the years and attend Maverick games.

Harper says he hopes Tittle will be able to attend the "Y.A. Tittle Athletic Fieldhouse" dedication ceremony scheduled for some time in late October.
