UPDATE: Columbus County man fatally stabbed during home break-in

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

A Columbus County man was fatally stabbed during an altercation following a home break-in Friday morning

According to officials, deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office responded to 483 Todd Town Road in the Mollie community around 2:30 a.m. in reference to a burglary with a stabbing victim.

When deputies arrived, they found Christopher Lee Nobles, 34, lying on the shoulder of the road approximately 100 yards from the home.

Christopher Nobles recently lived at the home and was attempting to break into the home according to Captain David Nobles.

An altercation between Christopher Nobles and James Berry Huggins III, 32, ensued leaving both men injured.

Tabor City EMS transported Nobles to McLeod Loris Hospital in South Carolina where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is expected to be performed Saturday morning.

Huggins did not immediately seek medical treatment.

Captain Nobles said he's unsure if charges will be filed against Huggins.

Columbus County authorities are still investigating the incident.
