SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Lawrence Piper pleaded guilty Friday for charges related to the 2010 death of his wife.

The Chatham County District Attorney's office said Piper was driving a boat under the influence of alcohol and cocaine when his wife, Dawn Piper, fell out of their boat and hit the propeller.

The family rushed her to the nearest dock, which was the Crab Shack, but she did not survive.

The Chatham County District Attorney's office has charged him with homicide by vessel.

Piper hesitated in court Friday at first, not sure if he was ready to take responsibility for incident that killed his wife.

But because of evidenciary issues, the state said they agreed to reduce the charges and agreed to a lesser sentence.

The District Attorney's office dropped the charges to a misdemeanor homicide by vessel and wreckless boating.

Piper pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to 24 months on probation.
