Drivers say Church St. bikes lanes causing problems

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Changes to a heavily traveled downtown road are causing headaches for some drivers.

Two new bikes lanes have created gridlock on Church Street leading in and out of downtown Nashville, according to some commuters.

Church Street in front of Nashville Electric Service downtown was formerly four lanes, with two lanes in either direction. With the addition of bike lanes, the road is now three car lanes, one in each direction and one turn lane.

Downtown businessman Gary Baker has been commuting for 20 years and driving downtown for 40. He said the change is one of the worst decisions the city has ever made.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean disagrees. He said the change is part of being a better, healthier, more modern city.

"We are trying different ways," Dean said. "Bikers can ride more safely. It's a step forward."

Dean added if the change turns out to be a huge problem, it can be modified at a later date.
