Lamar County deputies participate in national campaign

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -
Lamar County Sheriff's deputies took to the streets Thursday night as part of a national campaign.

Members of the Lamar County Sheriff's Department spent Thursday night participating in the national crackdown on drunk driving.

"We conducted road side safety checkpoints, traffic stops as part of the Drive Sober, Get Pulled over campaign," said Brad Weather with the LCSD.

Officers were able to work over time, not costing the county a dime, due to a federal grant, and the night paid off.

"Last night we had six DUIs, 117 citations, and seven drug arrests," said Weathers.

Officers concentrated on problem areas through out the county, some of which are high traffic areas.

"Anytime we can get impaired drivers off the street, its one less potential fatality for a loved one to get injured or die," said Weathers.

The drive sober or get pulled over campaign runs from August 15 through September 1 which covers the end of summer and the Labor Day weekend.

"Drunk driving is always a big part of what we look for," said Weathers.

According to traffic safety marketing.gov, in 2012, more than 2,000 people were devastated by the tragic, preventable death of loved ones in alcohol-involved crashes.

Law enforcement's goal is to present an unmistakable show of force, ready to arrest drunk drivers who put lives at risk, according to the site.
